Advanced Biosciences

The study in advanced biosciences aims to contribute to the development of international society by understanding the mechanism of life through integration of most-advanced biotechnology and information technology, and then applying the results of the research to various fields such as medicine, food and environment. The area of advanced biosciences at the Faculty of Environment and Information Studies is one of the few educational programs in the world where such research is conducted.

The following explanation introduces some of the projects categorized under various research heads:

Environmental Biotechnology

The projects in environmental biotechnology aim to employ earth-friendly biotechnologies. Such technologies are then applied to plastics that can prevent global warming and microorganisms that produce energy resource from carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.

Bioplastics Project Bioplastics, derived from lactic acid, have drawn attention of scientists by their potential to reduce carbon-dioxide emission. The Bioplastics Project examines methodologies to produce high-quality and inexpensive bioplastics fermented by E. coli bacteria.
Microorganism Culture Project for Oil Production This project is aimed to create a super eco-microorganism that produces light oil from carbon-dioxide, to simultaneously resolve two issues - an exhaustion of fossil fuels and global warming caused by heavy consumption.

Biomedical Science

The projects in biomedical science investigate various diseases such as cancer and diabetes by integrating advanced technologies including molecular biology, informatics and analytical chemistry. Such projects contribute to the diagnosis and treatment of the above-mentioned diseases.

Cancer Metabolism Analysis Project This project identifies the metabolic disposition of cancer cells by investigating metabolic substances relating to cancer development and growth.
Disease Diagnosis Support Project This project attempts to create a useful disease diagnosis support system that enables diagnosis of widely prevalent diseases such as diabetes and breast cancer, by applying the techniques of life information science and systems biology.

Genome Science

The projects in genome science tries to understand the mechanism of the living phenomenon by analyzing genomes - a collection of the entire gene of a living creature - and use various experimental and information processing techniques.

Genome Information Analysis Project This project conducts a comparative analysis of genome sequence in various organisms including humans in order to find the significance of sequence patterns and unravel the mystery of genomic evolution.
Genome Design Project This project attempts to understand how genomic genes combine in order to produce materials useful for human life and create useful genome designs.

Systems Biology

The projects in systems biology tries to provide a comprehensive understanding of life through new bio-scientific methods based on a vast reservoir of knowledge on living organisms accumulated in the twentieth century.

Biological and Cellular Simulation Project This project aims to develop software named "E-CELL System", a basic environment to run various simulations on cells and organisms on the computer.
Virtual E. Coli Bacteria Project This project attempts to gather a large amount of data on E. Coli bacteria for data modeling to understand its life phenomenon and to produce useful materials using various microbes
