Language, Culture, and Communication
Language connects people and gives rise to culture. As people communicate and connect with each other, language and culture develop. Based on this view of language, culture and communication, we analyze various phenomena and problems in the world.
*The term, "area," here does not refer to the major, department, or course to which students or faculty members belong. It is used for convenience and clarity to explain the areas of study that are currently offered in the two faculties. Students at SFC engage in projects based on their interests, consequently creating fields of study of their own.
Using Language to Express, Communicate, and Make Meaning of the World
Students go beyond conventional language learning to better understand thought, culture, and people's lives around the world. They develop their ability to communicate globally as professionals with advanced language proficiency.
Language Education and Language Policy
We examine issues in language, culture, and communication by taking insights from theories in second language acquisition and designing learning environments, among others. Furthermore, our research on language education is linked to language policies that aim to promote multicultural conviviality.
Language and Its Relationship with Culture and the World
What function does language have? How do we use language to engage in culture and interact with others? We address these questions by drawing on cognitive linguistics, sociolinguistics, literature and narrative.
Language Use in Politics and Society
Language use reflects social and political issues of the time. Examples include conflicts over language use within a country, the relationship between religions and societies, and coexisting alongside those who have crossed borders. We examine these issues from various approaches.
