Advanced Design Studies
We develop what we call "X-Design": a design and research field that does not have a name yet. We aim to contribute to the future of the earth, society, and culture through many x's ― by X/crossing and multiplying fields of study (field x field) in eXtreme, eXperimental ways, and by genuinely eXpressing ourselves.
*The term, "area," here does not refer to the major, department, or course to which students or faculty members belong. It is used for convenience and clarity to explain the areas of study that are currently offered in the two faculties. Students at SFC engage in projects based on their interests, consequently creating fields of study of their own.
Digital Fabrication and Algorithmic Design
Using digital fabrication, 3D/4D printing, and computer algorithms, we "grow" architecture like plants and venture into an uncharted territory of monozukuri (creating things).
Art, Landscape, and Communication
We strive to design architecture, city, landscape, and placemaking for the future by delving into such diverse fields as geometry, art, environmental design, cartographic representation, history and regional landscapes, placemaking and communication.
Art, Science, and Performance
We transcend boundaries and combine art and science by blending intuition-driven artistic activities with down-to-earth scientific activities that center on data collection and analysis.
Pioneering New Frontiers in Circulation Designs and Community Development Practices
We aim to develop new circular design methods based on repurposing and regeneration by combining the reuse, resale, recycling, and upcycling of existing items, and applying them in community development projects in collaboration with the areas surrounding SFC and the local governments in the Shonan area.
