Details of the Curriculum

The doctoral program is built around research and dissertation writing. Students formulate their own research plans and work on their dissertation projects under the supervision of the Research Advisory Group that primarily consists of faculty members of the Graduate School of Media and Governance. Students must complete all coursework during the master's program, and upon entering the doctoral program, they engage in research and learning through concrete research projects. While master's students participate in projects to become career professionals, students in the doctoral program are expected to design, plan, and conduct their own projects and produce innovative outcomes in the integrated realm of media and governance. In so doing, they work toward developing specialized research, ideological frameworks, and new methodologies.

To be awarded a doctoral degree, students must fulfill multiple requirements, including acquiring foreign language and communication skills, the ability to draft an original syllabus proposal, as well as submitting and defending a dissertation proposal*. Once students become doctoral candidates, they will find greater research opportunities, such as collaborating internationally on existing projects or linking their research with the master's Academic Projects. Through collaboration with the Keio Research Institute at SFC (KRIS), students can also work with businesses and local governments on commissioned projects or participate in consortium-based initiatives. In these various ways, students in our doctoral program engage in cutting-edge research and circulate their ideas in society.
