Why I Chose Keio SFC and Japan
After spending most of my schooling in Canada, I was interested in exploring another country for my post-secondary education. During my senior year of high school, a family relative who studied in Japan introduced me to Keio SFC. The diverse fields it offers, from visual arts to business and sustainability, captivated me as someone eager to explore multiple disciplines before choosing one. Certainly, its academic rigor and rich cultural environment were very much irresistible. Today, I am grateful for the opportunity to study at such a prestigious institution. The faculty and my peers' support have made Keio SFC feel like home, fostering cherished memories and guiding me toward my true passion.
Challenges and Upsides of Attending a Japanese University
With little Japanese knowledge but a few basic words from anime, I was anxious about attending a Japanese university, let alone living there. However, upon arriving, I was welcomed and supported by incredible people. Everyone I encountered was kind and generous, always willing to help. Aside from this, GIGA's English-based curriculum allowed me to pursue my academic interests without worrying about language barriers and encouraged me to learn Japanese through its language classes. Additionally, our school's International Affairs team assisted me in settling into my new life in Japan. My four years in Japan were filled with much support, and I am still grateful.
Supportive and Unique Learning Environments at SFC
After talking to my friends at other universities outside of Japan, I realized that SFC offers more of a community of support and engagement from which I was able to benefit. The smaller size of the GIGA program promotes meaningful interactions between students and professors, allowing students to communicate directly with them. This intimate environment at SFC is one of its greatest strengths; everyone benefits from each other's learning experiences. In addition, what sets SFC apart as an exceptional and distinctive academic environment is the ability to have one-on-one conversations for feedback, especially on graduation projects, which I appreciate.
Message to Prospective Students
Certainly, starting on a new chapter in post-secondary education will bring a mix of excitement and anxiety. I assure you, however, that deciding to embark on this journey at SFC will be a decision you will not regret. You will be able to forge lifelong friendships and pursue your dreams in an environment crafted for your success. Good luck, and I hope that your adventure at SFC is as memorable as mine! :)
