A paper from Prof. Savage's CompMusic Lab led by Master's student and first author Yuchen Yuan was announced as the winner of the Best Application Award in the 21st International Society for Music Information Retrieval Conference (ISMIR 2020), an international symposium for research on music-related data.

Automated Judgements of Music Copyright Infringement", people's perceptual judgements on music similarity of adjudicated copyright cases were collected and compared with the similarity results calculated by automated algorithms. This research reveals directions for further investigation of the role of similarity in music copyright law. The paper was co-authored by Prof. Savage, Prof. Shinya Fujii, and recent CompMusic Lab graduate Sho Oishi from SFC, as well as by international collaborators from George Washington University Law School, the University of Auckland, and Goldsmiths University of London. Paper, poster, & video presentation can be accessed at https://program.ismir2020.net/poster_1-02.html.

ISMIR 2020 is the world's leading research forum on processing, searching, organizing and accessing music-related data. It was originally planned to be held in Montréal, Canada. Following COVID-19 recommendations, it transitioned into an online conference on October 10-16, 2020, with 24-hour schedule to facilitate accessibility and visibility across time zones globally.

It was the first time I presented at such an international academic conference. I am happy and feel highly honored by receiving the Best Application Award for our paper. I am grateful for the guidance and support from Prof. Savage, research collaborators, professors of X-Design (XD) Program of the Graduate School of Media and Governance at Keio University SFC, CompMusic Lab members, and everyone who has supported us. Through peer review and presentations, we were able to get various opinions and suggestions. Encouraged by the award, I will continue working hard on the study.
