Annual Summer Trip to CMU|徳田英幸(政策・メディア研究科委員長)

(今号は、各おかしらの得意な言語で「おかしらの夏休み」をテーマに執筆をお願いしています。)

I have a school to return every summer. The school is Carnegie Mellon where I took my first job in 1983 and had been working for a few years after I took the position at Keio Univ. CMU is the top three research universities besides MIT and Stanford and it is well-known that CMU has the largest research budget per a researcher in CS field in US. Almost all my professional training was done here and I have learned openness in CMU, liberalism, fun to teach, researcher's passion, importance of research atmosphere, and fun and intensity in research collaboration with industrial sponsors.

The last year was the twenty's anniversary of my visit to Pittsburgh. I have visited the iron city in mid August. Every year I enjoy a lot to meet with my old colleagues and CMU friends. Among many things, the most exciting thing was that I could play tennis for straight two hours without taking any rest with Kanade-sensei. It was a big surprise that I could play for more than an hour although my Achilles' tendon has been recovered. Also, I didn't expect that Kanade-sensei's energy never last. A world leading researcher is always tough as well as keen.

I also met my x-secretary Joan who took care of our project and me. She is retired now and is living with her husband. She also invited me to join a dinner at her home and it was a memorable night. I hoped that she will have an enjoyable life. Mr. O is one of the Tokuda Lab's OB who is now in a Ph.D. program at CMU-CSD under supervision of Prof. Satya. I also wish that he will complete his degree program soon and will become a world leading researcher in CS.

To finalize our annual CMU-KEIO workshop, I also visited Prof. Rajkumar who used be a colleague. We fixed the workshop to be held in Pittsburgh in October. This workshop started more than ten years ago, but I often wondering whether our students level improved or not. We still have to work very hard to narrow that gap between our research and leading research institution in the world.

This year, I'll go back to CMU in a week as well.
