Message to Students

In Favor of the Extreme

Keio University Shonan Fujisawa Campus (SFC) was established in 1990, to train students who can resolve complex social problems by integrating technology, science, design and policy. After dismantling traditional disciplinary boundaries we wish to create a science or Jitsugaku that students can learn and apply.

We recommend students to think daringly and put their learning into practice. The following is a passage from The Autobiography of Fukuzawa Yukichi:

-I always prepare for the worst-
"It has been a habit of mine to be prepared for the extreme in all situations; that is, to anticipate the worst possible result of any event so that I should not be confounded when the worst did come."

In order to change the world we must not only observe social trends but also think and act daringly. Keeping this thought in mind, students, from the first year, are provided opportunities in Seminars, to design research projects in a state-of-the-art IT environment. They can also take various foreign language classes, and get the support from enthusiastic faculty members. We hope that when students graduate from the University, they will be well-prepared not only to challenge social reality but to transform it.
